My visit to the Lazy Bowen Hideaway on Bowen Island's east side came the last week of March this year. Just in time to watch the 250 daffodil bulbs open up to full bloom. A bright yellow display hinting that spring was on its way.

The new out-swing Anderson double French door was expertly installed by Graham Ritchie. The vinyl exterior will take all the weather that BC can blow at it....hopefully this is the end to the water damage from the strong southeasterly storms.

A new friend of mine, Maureen, owner of the Evergreen Hall, and I took the opportunity to dine at Mik-sa Restaurant in Snug Cove. My plank grilled Steelhead trout with an assortment of fresh vegetables was seasoned to perfection and cooked just right. Of course, more than I could eat in one sitting so it made a delicious lunch the next day. Maureen ordered the pasta with Alfredo sauce....another tasty meal that was a HUGE portion and taken home in a box as well. We had a long and leisurely meal from 6 - 9. At 9ish the restaurant became more of a "bar" environment and the noise escalated...it was time to go.

Be sure to try out their fine food.......I highly recommend it. Mention that you are a guest at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway and receive a 10% discount at Mik-sa's.

Many of our guests want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city to wind down and relax from the everyday grind. So, we asked, what else can we do to help achieve their relaxation goals? Answer: provide spa amenities on site as an easy to book option.

We have the portable massage table on property making it convenient for guests to totally relax in the comfort and privacy of the Hideaway or Petite Suite. Of course, Genevieve and I gave it a test run and she truly has magic hands and knows how to transform a tranquil space into an even calmer environment. A Great Ski House Too!!!

It is hard to impress guests that already live on Pacific Northwest Islands but we succeeded ......the Southerly Views from the Lazy Bowen Hideaway is special and spectacular. They also took advantage of the great skiing at Cypress Ski resort........A short 20 minute ferry ride from Bowen Island to Horseshoe Bay plus a 30 minute drive to Cypress. The ski resort is so close you can see the glow of the night lights from the seaside deck.

"Our family came up from Bainbridge Island to Bowen Island for a 2-day getaway after Christmas, and to ski and snowshoe at Cypress. What a perfect combination! Gorgeous, sunny vistas over Horseshoe Bay from Lazy Bowen, the wonderful beach house, then a scenic ferry ride over to Cypress, where the snow was perfect and panorama breathtaking. Even for those like us who are accustomed to the great beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the scenic ferry rides to and fro', this experience was a show-stopper.

Visitors, pay heed to all the caveats about Cleator Road - -our Audi A-4 wagon seemed perfect as it is not too large and has AWD - - but do not let the road stop you from renting this house, which has the most beautiful views imaginable and is nicely stocked for your getaway. The property is quite rustic, but extremely comfortable and clean. Our favorite features, other than the view, were the fantastic fireplace ( raised hearth) and the beds, which were really comfortable and dressed in lovely linens and pillows. The one bathroom is very nice with a very good shower and tub.

Working with the owner has been a real pleasure, and we hope to rent there again. It is wonderful in the winter, and we'll bet the summers there are even more fantastic, although the winter scape with the snow-capped mountains and lights from Cypress across the water were truly unforgettable.

One more thing: the ride into town is short and scenic, so getting in to shop or enjoy the most delicious latte ever at Snug Cafe is a cinch. A+ in our book."

Wild Winter Weather on Bowen

A November Squamish Squall

Wild winter weather on Bowen can be cold and beautiful.....the trick is to be prepared for whatever comes your way November through April. We supply firewood, lanterns, flashlights, and warm cozy blankets. No candles as they can be a fire hazard. Just last month, November 2010, we had gale force winds all day long. The icy cold Northerly storm blew down through the Squamish and blasted the north side of Bowen. they call these winds Gap Winds. Trees fell causing power outages......some up to 14 hours. Our power went out at 8:30am.

Even with all the gusts our beach at Eagle Cliff was calm and our southerly exposure kept the house warm. But we couldn't brew a cup of coffee or fix breakfast so a visit to Artisan Eats was the ideal solution. It was DELICIOUS!!!

The above photos are of Finesterre Island and it's unique driveway. As you can see, they can only "drive" to their island when the tide is out. The owner drilled his own tunnel to access his home at the top of the island.

After breakfast a tour around the island was in order. At least the car was heated and there was music. I headed toward the north side of Bowen, Hood Point and Finesterre Island. Chasing the storm was thrilling. The wind was blowing so hard I could barely stand up. My intention and challenge was to capture Bowen winter photos for next year's calendar. Warm wool socks, layers of clothes, kept me warm on this bright, windy, and chilly day.

Then it was dinner time.....the power was still out and I was hungry. My neighbor and Bowen's 2010 Citizen of the Year, Murray Atherton accepted my invitation to Blue Eyed Mary's. The meal was the best that I have ever eaten while on Bowen. The bison was perfectly cooked and seasoned. If you have food allergies they are knowledgeable and willing to accommodate your needs. You must give them a try before their lease runs out.

After dinner around 10:00pm, I was cozy and wrapped in a plush blanket and gazing at the fireplace, I thought, "OK, It's time, might as well go to bed." I turned off my lantern and <<< POOF >>>> like magic the lights finally came back on. In retrospect, it was kind of like camping but in the comfort of our home. The stars were brighter, the view of Vancouver crisper, and entertainment was provided by the light of a lantern. I loved it!!!

Rob & I would like to thank Jan Stevens at Lazy Bowen Hideaway for a lovely, long-weekend vacation. Jan was very cordial & completely thorough; she was diligent in getting us all the required information to make our stay safe & enjoyable. Bowen Island is a quick ferry ride from Vancouver 15-20 min. We followed Jan's instructions to the waterfront property & used a 4-wheel drive to get to the house. It is a 2-bedroom, (secluded) & well-maintained & preserved (historical),vacation home. The home offers waterfront decks, BBQ, & fireplace for a homey feel; it also has a large flat screen TV for rainy days & nights. Had a lovely time; slept well (comfy bed); had BBQ one night & went to Blue Eyed Mary's for dinner the next night. We golfed Saturday afternoon at the Bowen Island Golf Club; we had a very lovely & relaxing time. Thanks Jan.

We have added new amenities to the Lazy Bowen Hideaway and Petite Suite

The above photo was taken from the Eagle Cliff beach looking up at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway through the blooming Laburnum.

My recent trip, May 6-11, to the Lazy Bowen Hideaway was weather perfect. It was short sleeve T-shirt weather; a bright & sunny 65-70 degrees. We, that is Uli and Reg and Me, worked outside in the lower yard as well as the cliff viewpoint. The Cliff View Point was occupied by an above ground vegetable garden from tenants past. The raised garden was taking up valuable people relaxation space. We used the garden soil for a few new drought tolerant plants and bordered the flower bed with 75lb boulders, perfect bench height for sitting and taking in nature and the spectacular view. We brought in some gravel to create a "patio" of sorts and then added a few chaise lounges for relaxing. What a terrific spot to wile away a sunny day.

Working outdoors was golden with the Laburnum blooming all around. As you can see, every photo has a blooming Laburnum tree in it. If you love spring with all of its flora remember to visit Bowen Island and the Hideaway in the first few weeks of May next year.

We have added new amenities to the property:

Window coverings- We have found that our guests feel more comfortable covering up the windows at night.
Lock Boxes- The Keys are now securely stored in lock boxes making the keys easier to find and more secure... not that we worry about it much.
Weber propane BBQ- We now have a Weber Briquette BBQ for our Petite Suite guests and a propane BBQ for the Hideaway.
Coffee Grinder- We have added coffee grinders to both the Hideaway & the Petite Suite. Guests asked and we supplied.
Cast Iron skillet- this is my favorite pan to cook in and we needed one in the Petite Suite. Its ready now as I seasoned it for you all.
Wool area rug- The hideaway has a new area rug in front of the aqua sofa. It is a great anchor for the room.
Swivel rocker - We added a custom re-upholstered chair with funky fabric to the Petite Suite. It started out as burnt orange and it was only $4.95. We needed another seat in the Petite Suite living room so there it is. It is comfy too.
Ottoman - soon to arrive at the Petite Suite. A custom upholstered round ottoman ...to be delivered in July.

Our goal is to continuously update and re-fresh the property with the conveniences of home.

Round Bowen Challenge 2008 guest, Heather Nelson,

"We had a wonderful stay, and LOVED watching the weather come and go and change through the picture windows overlooking the bay! We were warm and snug inside. We had some wonderful adventures kayaking, hiking Mt Gardner, and walking the beaches... and it made our playtime all the better knowing we had a cozy place to return to! We brought our own food and cooked up some great feasts in the kitchen. And, enjoyed our morning coffee listening to the waves from the comfort of the Adirondack chairs on the porch.

With access to the beach right from the doorstep, the Lazy B is the perfect get away for sea kayakers and beachcombers.

The driveway was NO problem, we drove our Chevy Astro all-wheel drive mini-van with 21 foot long surfski's on top down the drive to the house and back up.

All your hand-outs and directions were helpful. Murray happened to run into us just as we arrived at the top of the driveway and was a wonderful greeting party." Heather Nelson

Heather and Brandon Nelson are extreme weather kayakers and write about their adventures in several Kayaking magazines. They also have Chargelife blog site that accounts for all their outdoor activities. They were terrific guests during the 2008 Round Bowen Challenge. At the time Heather was a new Mom and still placed 2nd in her race division. I was very impressed.

Annual Round Bowen Challenge June 6th, 2010

"The 11th Annual Round Bowen Challenge will be held on June 6th, 2010 and is set to be the greatest set of Races yet! Bowen Island Kayaking has opened up the Finistere dash to Paddleboards this year, and will also still be holding the Outrigger Relay and of course the Round Bowen Challenge and grand post race party. " The above photo was taken by Heather Nelson, one of our past guests, while she competed in the 2008 Round Bowen Challenge. I love this photo!!!

If you are a competitive paddler the Lazy Bowen Hideaway & the Lazy B Petite Suite are the ideal waterfront accommodations. Paddle to and from the property as the beach is only 1 minute away, and then store your kayak on the property grounds. Above are our 2009 guests paddling down below the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. You can see the cottage on the left peaking through the trees perched just above the rocky shore. The Neighborhood dock is just 1 minute down the trail and perfect for docking your kayak during your stay.

As avid recreational kayakers our last year's guests were loving all the race activities while enjoying their own adventures on Bowen. Below they are taking a break in Deep Cove just around the point from Snug Cove. If you love to watch the race and all the competitive activities this is a terrific weekend to spend at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. Enjoy the race from the seaside decks or get involved in the activities in Snug Cove.....It is what Bowen Island is all about....good healthy fun!!!

A Romantic Evening

As the owner of the Lazy Bowen Hideaway I like to follow up with my guests to see how their visit was. At the same time, I ask if there is anything we can do to make our cottage even better........I love to get positive and Honest feedback as it enables us to work toward perfection. THE CLEATOR ROAD SHUTTLE SERVICE

The Lazy Bowen Hideaway and the Lazy B Petite Suite are quietly located down the 'ol deer trail now turned into a private, one lane, gravel road. Cleator Road is privately maintained by the few residences that live along this gravel road. There are 3 tight turns and it is steep in spots.

In order to maintain the road we require AWD or 4 Wheel drive vehicles

to drive up and down Cleator Road.

It is the challenge of the road that maintains the privacy

of our gorgeous waterfront property.

Years ago when Bowen was less developed the road was truly a deer trail. When we arrived for our vacations everything was walked up and down the trail as we moved in and out. Our parents were so glad that they had us, the energetic children, to do the runs up and down the trail transporting the goods. It is truly a great exercise opportunity.

The Lazy Bowen Hideaway is expanding. The Lazy Bowen Hideaway can accommodate 4 adults in 2 queen size beds plus one full size fold down couch. If you have 3 couples or 6 adults then you can Add the Lazy "B" Petite Suite to your Lazy Bowen Hideaway booking for the use of the complete property. As of February 5th we will be able to accommodate up to 9 guests.

The Lazy B Petite Suite is nestled under our main floor hideaway. We are updating and furnishing the suite focusing on comfort and style. Check back for our finished project after February 5th. All design work by Jan Stevens of Jan Stevens Design.

A Perfect Holiday

My friend, Denys, and I can't stop talking about how much we enjoyed your cottage. He loves to cook and found everything he was looking for in your well-stocked kitchen.

We loved the decor of the place, in particular, how the many shades of blues and greens complimented the seascape.

We never turned on a TV the entire time we were there. We saw meteor showers at night and watched the boat traffic during the day. We swam off the dock and explored the island. Instead of music, we listened to the sound of the waves lapping against the cliff below us. I brought a stack of books and read most of them. All in all, a perfect holiday - just what I needed.

We will definitely be back.

Thanks again for sharing your lovely home with us. We felt privileged to be there. And the people downstairs were very nice.

Perfect Summer Time Weather on Bowen Island

The weather in July was absolutely fantastic! We had the fans on high and the shades closed as the Bowen Island temperatures reached record levels for July 09. What a shame to hide the spectacular view. But, it made jumping into the water that much better. What a "cool" place to hang out. True to tradition, Dana Mar joined Akira for the sunny days.

For weather variety one Saturday evening we had a colorful storm. The winds came up and the rains began just before sundown. As the sun set the view ranged in color from orange to lavender. We turned our chairs around to face the colorful view. The thunder pounded Eagle Cliff and the lightening illuminated the evening skies. And then came the double rainbow. Our 3 weeks at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway was filled with many activities. Leonard Gurski, our island guide and wonderful neighbor, lead the way on several beautiful hikes. The photo below was taken on our way up to the summit of Mt. Gardner: looking east toward the Coastal Mountains and Horseshoe Bay. I learned that hiking Mt. Gardner is for experienced and fit hikers with the right boots. It took 2 1/2 hours to arrive at this location with the summit an additional hour straight up the mountain. Akira and Len would hike to the summit a few days later. Because the weather was so hot the view was hazy but still a 360 degree view of all the surrounding islands and mainland. As you can see, the Mt Gardner summit also has cell phone towers and helicopter pads.

With a few days of rest we were ready to hike through the Cape Roger Curtis acreage on the south west coast of Bowen. It is gorgeous nearly untouched land soon to be developed. Personally, I enjoyed the "walk" rather than the long steep hike up Mt. Gardner. Enroute from CRC we stopped at my favorite destination, Alderwood Farm, to enjoy a BBQ'd lunch. As we sat outside in the shade waiting for lunch the pet chickens hunted and pecked all around. These beautiful pets provide free range eggs for the farm store...they are never food. That being said, my chicken sandwich was delicous.

Mixed into the hiking, swimming and long walks we accomplished many chores and home improvements. After 30 years all the decks were pressure washed and oiled. It was the perfect job to complete with the high temps. The decks look renewed.

Screens on the screen doors were replaced. The bath tub drain was cleaned. The 30 year old stove fuses were replaced as well. So many odd jobs to keep the house in repair. One of these days I may really find the time to read a book.

And finally, the trees on the property were pruned. Dave's Tree Service was fantastic. They showed up on time and worked steady (no breaks) throughout the day. I got more than my money's worth. Dave gave the arbutus trees some needed attention, trimming out the dead wood. Dave bravely dangled in the tree out over the cliff. He was amazing. My favorite work of Dave's was the spiral pruning of the fir tree. He lightly pruned it to create a gorgeous living sculpture.

Dave's guys also cleared the land of dead trees and cedars that were growing like weeds. At each step they would ask, "What more can we do?" They were patient and civil, the kind of hard working guys you don't mind having at your house all day. I highly recommend Dave's Tree Service. You will not be disappointed.

One of our natural nightly treats was the visit from a young buck. He stopped by to slowly graze on our property eating the blackberries. As you can see, he is directly below the deck without a fear of us at all. He eventually broke through the fence surrounding Colleen's garden. Bad Buck!! They are determined to eat all the pretty flowers and tasty greens. I don't blame him, everything is so fresh on Bowen Island.

"We Had a Perfect Family Getaway"

I just wanted to send a quick note to tell you what a wonderful time we had at your cottage. The cottage itself was fantastic, not to mention the stunning view from the back. We had a perfect family getaway as we spent the whole time outdoors on the beach. Either the beach just below or our quick daytrip to Bowen Bay where we made a crab hotel (sand castle) and filled it with the little crabs we found under the rocks.

The kids want to move in, honestly, so do Matt and I. We discovered the candy shop in town, checked out the toy/book store, Phoenix on Bowen, which was stocked with some of our favourite books and high quality toys.

We are already trying to figure out when we can make it back!!! We have fallen in love with your little island and I think we will be coming often for little weekend getaways. The ferry ride was great too! From door to door, it took us 1.5 hours from Coquitlam!

A Beautiful Spring Week in May

A wonderful spring retreat from 98 degrees. The viburnum surrounded the cabin with sunshine yellow and vivid green. The lilac scented the air. While touring the island for beautiful scenery I discovered the most interesting tree. I believe it is the same tree that is highlighted in the TV show Harper's Island. Watch Saturdays on CBS. Even though I traveled alone I was never alone long......the neighbors were the most neighborly. I so enjoyed their company. Anne-Marie helped me plant chives and other perennials around the property. And, she prepared a terrific dinner for us all. Jean sent ground cover starts down and Terry put them in the ground. Len tested out the new TV as well as delivered the new sofa down the road. Harry & Murray were there to lend a hand too. Eagle Cliff has the best neighbors ever.

A1 Cellulose Blowers arrived on time and did a fabulous job. The recycled newspaper aka cellulose insulation was blown in between the main floor and the basement suite to improve the sound insulation. What a huge improvement!! The sounds have been reduced by at least 75% . Voices are gone, TV is near silent, Colleen and James are pleased....and so am I. This was a home improvement well worth the expense. The best part was the crew cleaned up their mess before they left. I highly recommend Reggie and his guys.

On Sunday, May 17th I took the Granville Island Water Taxi over to Granville Island to meet Terry. It was a fantastic boat trip...smooth and only 30 minutes. Terry road Amtrak up from Seattle to Vancouver. The train was first class, comfortable, and stress free. The Bald Eagles escorted the train during a portion of the trip while the rest of the scenery was North West beautiful.

Granville Island was very busy as it was the Queen's holiday. The produce and meats were inviting as well as the baked goods. Now that is the place to have lunch. Buy a little here and that from there and then find a picnic table near the water under the sun. It was a lovely day.

On my next trip I will try Amtrak to Vancouver and then a taxi to Granville Island. Shop there for my grocerys and then off to Bowen via the Water Taxi. No more Hertz rental car for me....that is another story.

Listening To The Surf on The Beach Below - Totally Idyllic!

We had an absolutely wonderful time - thank you so much. Your house is lovely and the view was absolutely spectacular - we spent lots of time gazing at the ferries going back and forth and listening to the surf on the beach below - totally idyllic!

We will certainly return as we all adore Bowen and have now found our perfect hideaway.

A Sister's Little Getaway

"I think we have started a family tradition."

Thank you so much for the stay at the Lazy Bowen Hideaway. It was so beautiful I can't express what an amazing time we all had. My children are still talking about it and I think we have started a family tradition. Ken was so impressed with the decore he spent a great deal of time just looking a reading various things. I was so happy to share the experience of watching old musicals with my children, something I did with my mom as a child.

It was perfect. Your neighbours were so kind and I just fell in love with Snug Cove as soon as we pulled in. We must check our schedule in the spring but I have a feeling we will be returning.

A White Christmas 2009

Typically winters on Bowen are mild and with a little bit of snow that might stay for the day. But the last 10 days have turned Bowen Island and the waterfront into a winter wonderland.

Thank you to my good neighbor and winter photographer, Murray Atherton, he has provided some beautiful waterfront views as the snow accumulated across the decking and outdoor patio furniture.

Christmas day added a few more inches. Of course this same snow accumulation is on our private road as well. Currently only chained 4-wheel drive vehicles can drive down Cleator Road. Our last guests used a toboggan to transport their luggage and groceries from Eagle Cliff down to the house. What a great idea!!!

Spend Time Together and Relax

Hi Jan, Our stay at the "Lazy" was great – we did what we were supposed to do – spend time together and relax. Great value made it even better.

Maiya and I were celebrating our third year anniversary and needing a get-away. While not too far from Burnaby, it felt like we could have been in the Okanagan.

*We arrived in the dark and had flashlights with us. We didn’t see what the hill looked like until Sunday afternoon when we left – yep, glad we didn’t try that in my van.

* Rod makes a great point. If you arrive after sunset and park at the top of the road a flashlight is most helpful when walking down Cleator Road to the Lazy Bowen Hideaway.

Cleator Road was just regraded last spring and is easily navigated with an all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicle the size of a Ford Explorer or smaller. This type of vehicle is required to maintain the quality of the road. My favorite all wheel drive vehicles so far for Cleator Road have been the Toyota Rav4 and the Ford Escape. What hill?

WONDERFUL Grey and Rainy Weekend

Hi Jan, We had a fantastic time. Our pictures demonstrate how you can have a wonderful time even when it's grey and raining.

The new Granville Island Water Taxi was perfect for us since we don't have a vehicle and the Bowen Island Bus drivers dropped us right at the top of the driveway. Bus driver, Hal, even loaned us his flashlight on Friday night to get back down the driveway in the dark.

We will definitely be back again (we loved the place) and I have already given your contact information to a couple of my co-workers who are planning trips over to Bowen.

We had a great time on Bowen. Our stay at Lazy Bowen was very comfortable. We really liked the "multiple seats" in the living room, which makes a reading afternoon quite enjoyable.

The view was quite amazing and seeing UBC (this is where we live) from this different perspective was very refreshing!
Of course the fire place was the high point of our stay!

A great comfortable place to stay with wonderful views." "Mum and dad had a great time and dad did see lots of birds that he hasn't seen before. He was in his element. His binoculars were glued to his face.""The hideaway was lovely with lots of interesting things to look at in every nook and cranny. We got there at 10:30am and didn't leave the hideaway till the next day because it was just so perfect. We were very lucky with the weather as is was very hot the day we arrived so we spent all day on the outside deck overlooking the bay. In the evening we relaxed in the living room, however, it did take us a while to decide what seat to sit on...hahahha. " "It was a great place to stay, Jan. Myself and Kevin would love to stay there again. Mum and dad wanted to stay forever!!!!!"

Hiking Mt.Collins

Len Gurski was our guide as we hiked up Mt. Collins, the 2nd highest peak on Bowen. The trail head started over by Hood Pt. West off of Smugglers Point Road.

Note: Dana Mar was the photogragher on all but one of the below photos.

The route followed an old logging road lined with Alders. As Len explained, "When the loggers clear cut the forest of Cedar and Hemlock, the opportunistic Alders sprouted up like weeds."

The Alder and Maple trees created a cool shaded canopy as we hiked.

The trail was lined with blooming Foxgloves.

About 2 hours into our journey we reached the old growth forest of cedar and hemlock. I am not sure of their height, maybe 100-200 feet tall, but I know that they stretched straight up into the wind stream and swayed in unison with the breezes. The forest floor was a spongy ancient bed of needles and leaves. Just Beautiful!

The summit of Mt. Collins is 1350 ft. and we were close to the top. The return trail was steeper and came out near the top of Cleator Road. The hike took a total of 3 hours and we can't wait to do it again.

Our Last Few Days on Bowen

Two weeks is not long enough to see and do and Be The annual walk around Lake Killarny was energizing and gorgeous once again. The lily pads bloom in the summer and create a colorful palette on the lake. The walk around Killarny is only 4 Kilometers.

Just across the street from the Killarny Park is the Bowen Island Bike Park. This course is perfect for those that dare ride the narrow planks of pain .......perfect for thrill seakers.

Akira and Dana chose to run the obstacle course instead.

We always visit Alderbrook Farm for organic and fresh ground meats. Their pet chickens lay all their free range eggs. During the weekend they have an outdoor BBQ serving fresh ground chicken burgers, Lamb burgers, and beef...all organic and delicious. The farm's gardens are idyllic too. Photo taken by Akira.

Tuesday night was soccer night at the Bowen Island School. If you can play soccer you can join in on the game.

Even though Akira was the youngest he gave the men a challenge.

What I love is how the players share the field with the deer....or is it the other way around?

A Beautiful summer vacation on Bowen: July 28th - August 14th, 2008

Our stay is nearly over and it has been beautiful at the cabin. The weather began with a 60-ish temp and soft showers for day one. The locals apologized for the weather but Akira and I love the sound of the rain tapping on the roof while we sit in front of the fire. The perfect opportunity for S'mores. The above photo was taken as I walked up the road from the Lazy Bowen Hideaway.

Speaking of the fireplace......a "new" oil painting was gifted to me from Lori Conway's mother by way of New Mexico. Lori's Great, Great Grandfather Langlois had his yacht and Bowen Island painted on canvas in the 1800's. He would be pleased to know it is perfect above our fireplace. In a future blog I will share more about the Langlois history on Bowen Island.

We socialized with our Eagle Cliff neighbors at the first annual Eagle Cliff potluck. Wow, I did not know our community was so large. One of the most interesting introductions came from meeting Tom Mitchell who lives high up Mt. Collins on a ranch. I learned that he is actually working on a Solar Energy project for the Las Vegas Valley. His investment group is collaborating with businesses in Las Vegas to develop a 100 square mile solar panel farm which would be capable of delivering power to the entire US. We hope it comes to light.

Dana, Akira's cousin, joined us August 2nd and they have had a blast. She brought the swimming weather with her from Seattle (?) which we appreciated. One day the two cousins swept the moss off the roof, cleaned the gutters, chopped wood, swam, walked 3k to Snug Cove and then finished up with Kayaking in the evening. And that was just one day on Bowen. Dana calls the cabin, "The perfect Happy Place." I believe she is right.

Kayaking Wednesday evening was smooth as glass. The quiet view floating in Deep Cove while the Bald Eagle soared above me was priceless. (my cell phone photo of the eagle above me will be added once we return to the states)

The sunsets have been gorgeous and we heard that the best could be seen from Smugglers Cove so we went exploring. Driving only 25 mph we barely missed a 6 point buck as it darted out of the bush to cross the road. The black tail deer come out at sunset time as well.

Our drive took us to the west side of Bowen called Hood Point West the future site of our hike with Len.

Saturday, August 9, Len Gurski aka Murski, our neighbor, guided us on a 3 hour hike from Hood Point West up Mt. Collins to an old growth forest. The trail was lined with blooming Foxgloves and pin straight Alders. The slope would undulate from steep to flat which provided a welcome break from the huffing and puffing. Near the Summit of Mt. Collins the forest changed to old growth fir trees 200 feet tall. At this elevation the winds made the forest sing and sway in unison.......it was breathtaking. How this old growth forest survived the logging of the 1900's is a puzzlement but we are glad it did. What a magnificent site!!!

Akira and Dana were still running as we neared the bottom of the mountain. On the other hand, I was tired and my muscles were fatigued. I slid on the downhill gravel trail and my body could not decide which way to fall. With a lunge to the right and then a correction to the left I landed on a bed of ferns and cushioned pine needle bed. Just a little wounded pride and nothing that a couple Ibuprofen couldn't mend.

Bowen Island is the model of recycling. Everyone sorts their trash not only in groups of paper, plastic, glass, and metal but subgroups of each. Thank goodness the volunteers at the Bowen Island Recycling Depot are happy to teach us the specifics of trash sorting. Here is where Dana and Akira had another unique opportunity. They went dumpster diving in the paper dumpster only to bring home a dozen discarded books for their reading pleasure. They were so excited to find great books for free. The volunteer explained to me that anytime kids are excited about books and reading (even from a dumpster) parents should be supportive. So I adjusted my perspective from "trash to treasure" and we have added to the cabin's library. While at the dumpsters edge a woman was tossing boxes of books into the dumpster mostly science and historical books. Interestingly, she had no need for them any longer as they did not contain information about Global Warming and the history books were too "colonial." Apparently she did not see the value of a different viewpoint from hers.

Our vacation is nearly over and the memories will last forever. We love Bowen Island.

One week from today we will be enjoying our summer home. Akira will be having a blast with his cousin, Dana. I will be loving the waves caressing the beach, the smell of the salty air, and the comfort of our waterfront home.

Tip: Garlic is the natural misquitoe repellant and the mosquitoes won't have a chance with us.

Summer 07

Last summer (2007) it was the year of the Turkey Vulture. We were surrounded by flocks of these huge birds with red heads. When we were hiking up Mt. Gardner we flushed out Turkey Vultures that were nesting. When we walked to Snug Cove they soared overhead. On our lst day 10-12 vultures were circling the Lazy Bowen and we knew that there was something dead close by. Sure enough, down on the beach there was a baby seal that would recycle itself in the circle of life.

Vacation time is near.

It is 9:00 am and only 98 degrees here in Henderson, Nevada. I have already started to pack as we will leave in 10 days for the cool, green, natural Bowen Island. The picture of trees growing like weeds, deer grazing in the front yard and eagles soaring overhead draws me on a daily basis to wish for the day to arrive quickly.

Akira loves the freedom of being at the cabin. I do too. It is another world that we deeply appreciate especially in contrast to the pavement, heat, and strip malls of Henderson.
